芬蘭指揮家沙隆年不僅僅在極年輕時就成為全球最頂尖的指揮家，而且他也是芬蘭最具代表性的當代作曲家。目前同時身兼倫敦愛樂管弦樂團的首席指揮、洛杉磯愛樂的終身指揮等多職，還是紐約愛樂的駐團作曲家、波羅地海音樂節的藝術總監兼創辦人等職務。沙隆年在芬蘭西貝流士音樂院主修指揮時，和另兩位當代知名芬蘭指揮家薩拉斯特（Jukka-Pekka Saraste）以及梵斯卡（Osmo Vänskä）是同學，不過大部份人可能會以為三人位居不同世代，因為沙隆年是三人中最早揚名國際的一位，早了將近二十年。

起初沙隆年一直是以作曲家自居，會走上全職指揮一途，則不在他的計劃之中；為了爭取更多讓自己的創作能夠被聽到的機會，索性便踏上指揮之途。而沙隆年能在指揮方面揚名國際，則是因為一九八三年臨時取代不能上場的指揮家提森．湯瑪斯指揮倫敦愛樂演出馬勒第三號交響曲而成名，在未曾學習過馬勒第三號交響曲，卻在短時間征服這首龐大的樂曲，顯示沙隆年驚人的音樂理解力、意志力和記憶力。也因著這成功的經驗，他拿下倫敦愛樂十年首席客座指揮的聘書，也成為國際炙手可熱的新生代指揮家，當時他年僅二十五歲，已同時身兼愛樂首席客座指揮、瑞典廣播交響樂團的首席指揮、兩職皆一任十年。而後同年間他到洛杉磯愛樂首次指揮後，即被該團資深樂手告知欣賞其指揮技術，之後在普列文離開該團總監職位後，沙隆年接任該職，前後長達十八年之久，在這段時間中將洛杉磯愛樂改造成一個非常頂尖的樂團，尤其對現代音樂更是拿手。

此套錄音收錄了沙隆年在一九八零年代到一九九零年代初期還未接掌洛杉磯愛樂時所灌錄的史特拉汶斯基作品。當中除了史特拉汶斯基知名的三大芭蕾舞劇「春之祭」、「彼得羅希卡」、「火鳥」以外，另還有他較少為人灌錄的神劇「伊底帕斯王」、「三樂章交響曲」、「管樂交響曲」、｢小提琴協奏曲」、「阿波羅」等。沙隆年非常崇拜史特拉汶斯基，這和許多當代知名作曲家很不同，史特拉汶斯基是音樂史上知名的變色龍，他的作品風格從早年《春之祭》時的民族樂風轉到現代樂風、又轉入新古典主義、後期更擁抱音列主義，這讓浪漫傳統的指揮家視他為缺乏傳統樂團美感、前衛指揮家則認為他不夠現代，但沙隆年對他卻是推崇有加，讓當年二十多歲的沙隆年持著敬畏的精神灌錄了這套史特拉汶斯基代表作品，一位頂尖當代作曲家剖析他最崇拜作曲家的大作，這絕對會是瞭解史特拉汶斯基創作精神的參考錄音。
